Gardner Dow Field was the original on-campus home field for UConn football and various other sports. It was named after Gardner Dow, a UConn football player who was killed in a game at the University of New Hampshire in 1919. Shortly after his death, the athletic fields were named in his honor, and a dedication plaque was placed on Hawley Armory. Gardner Dow Field is now the home of various academic buildings, including the Homer Babbidge Library. For years, the plaque remained on Hawley Armory, the current home of UConn’s ROTC program and Office of Veterans and Military Programs.
The Gardner Dow Field plaque has now been refurbished to its original look and will make its home at the J. Robert Donnelly Husky Heritage Sports Museum.
Please join us for an informal re-dedication ceremony of the plaque on Thursday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m.
Members of the Dow family will be in attendance, as well as representatives of UConn’s ROTC and Veterans and Military Programs and the Division of Athletics.
