  • Parkinson's Disease Nutrition Supplement Research

Volunteers diagnosed with Parkinson's disease are needed to participate in a research study at The University of Connecticut investigating the effects of chronic consumption of protein supplements on nutrient delivery and general health markers.

For this study participants will be asked to ingest for 6 months a placebo supplement or a novel protein supplement formulated by our research team to meet the specific nutritional needs for people with Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, participants will be asked to provide blood samples, perform body composition and physical function assessments and answer health-related questionnaires.

This study involves 4 visits to the Department of Kinesiology at UConn Storrs, over the course of 6 months. Visit 1 will be used to determine eligibility and review study procedures and will take ~ 2 hrs. to complete. Visits 2-4 will be used to compare your body’s chronic response to the different nutritional supplements 1) The modified protein supplement, or 2) A placebo (flavored water with no nutritional value or therapeutic effect) and will take 3 ½ hrs. each.

Participants may receive up to $100 over the 4 visits ($25 for each).

To be eligible, participants must be diagnosed with Parkinson disease, be 50 years old of age or older, on a stable dose of dopamine medications, without dementia or other unstable medical conditions and without Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery.
