    Spring 2026

    GERM 1171 – 001 The German Film:

Rebels, Dreamers, and Ravers: Youth Cultures in German Cinema, 1920s–Today

From the silent Expressionist classics of the Weimar Republic to the nightscapes of Berlin’s contemporary techno clubs, this course explores how German cinema has represented youth across a century of cultural and political transformation. Students will examine films that portray the restlessness, imagination, and resistance of young people as they navigate issues of politics, identity, gender, class, and belonging in modern Germany. Through weekly screenings and discussions, the course introduces major movements in German film history, including Expressionism, postwar realism, the New German Cinema, and contemporary filmmaking, while tracing shifting ideas about youth culture in German society. Readings and lectures (in English) provide historical context and analytical tools for understanding film form and cultural significance.

    Meeting Time & Location:  Tuesdays, 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM, SHH 101

This course counts for TOI 2 and Gen Ed Content Area 1 E / Content Area 4 INT.
