Vulnerable, disorienting, and mournful. Flashes of Merriment is a student show created and directed by Ian Rothauser, a 4th year acting student, who also performs in the show. A show that opens Friday night! In Ian’s own words “Flashes of Merriment is a devised piece, where the last circus performers on Earth pay the price for keeping their show running.” It is an idea she has had for a few years, originally as a screen play, but recently turning it into a staged production that lives in the Studio Theatre in UConn’s Drama Building. Fascinated with the ideas of mixing human and animal anatomy, Ian only had one question, how do I do that? The answer is puppetry! Leaning on the puppetry department, her friends, and her own experience with puppets, she has been able to put her vision on the stage. Reflecting on the month long process of creating this show, she says, “A lot of the themes in this show are things that I have questioned and struggled with personally, so being able to extend that outwards to a group of people and have everyone agree to explore it, has been not only interesting to watch, but cathartic to express and explore.” Please come experience this moving expression of stagnation and spectacle through movement! It opens October 31st at 11pm, if you show up in costume you get candy! Other times to see Flashes of Merriment are November first at 2pm and 7pm as well as November 2nd at 2pm. The show runs about an hour, sign up here. See you there!
