  • Today: Ed policy, learning & power: Dr. Coburn at UConn

    Dear UConn Graduate Students,

     

    The Center for Education Policy Analysis, Research, and Evaluation (CEPARE) is excited to announce that Dr. Cynthia E. Coburn, the Margaret Walker Alexander Professor in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University, will visit UConn on October 8 to deliver the Philip E. Austin Lecture, and engage in a post-lecture discussion with graduate students.

    Policy Implementation at the Intersection of Learning and Power

    In this talk, Dr. Coburn will share insights from two decades of studying policy implementation in U.S. public schools. She will explore:

    • Key lessons learned from two decades of studying policy implementation in U.S. public schools.
    • Policy implementation is presented as a learning process that is inherently social and interactive.
    • This learning process is shown to be shaped by relations of authority and situated a within systemic power structure.
    • The interplay between learning and power is identified as a driving force behind both stability and change in the social structure of public schooling.
    • Findings from studies of instructional policy implementation are shared to illustrate these pointsand how they matter in the Trump era.

     

    This lecture will close with reflections on how these dynamics matter in today’s educational and political landscape, and it will be followed by an informal discussion about her professional journey and Graduate students' research interests:
