  • 11/11 Understanding China

Recent events in Hong Kong have highlighted tensions between Western democracy and the Chinese centralized one-party system. The real situation is much more complex.  Hong Kong was a British colony for 150 years and enjoys more democracy now than at any time in its past.  Modern China is built upon a 2000 year old imperial system and is a complex mixture of communism, Confucianism and capitalism. It is also second only to the United States in terms of economic power and will likely surpass it within 10 years. This forum will explore the history, politics, economics and culture of China in relationship to Hong Kong, Taiwan and the West.

Our discussion will be primed by an expert panel including Victor Zatsepine, Assistant Professor of History, Meina Cai, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Chunsheng Yang, Assistant Professor of Literature, Cultures and Languages, all from the University of Connecticut. They will be joined by Global House RA Kezhen (Jenny) Wang who will add the perspective of a Chinese student studying in the United States.

It will be held on Tuesday, November 11th, at 7:00 - 8:30 PM in the McMahon Learning Community Lounge.
