From Surviving to Thriving: Centering Joy in Black Maternal Health—A Global Perspective

Too often, Black maternal health is framed solely as a crisis, but what if we shifted the narrative toward thriving, not just surviving? This talk will explore how joy, culturally affirming care, and holistic approaches—such as doulas, midwifery, and mental health support etc—can transform maternal health experiences for Black women worldwide. From different countries we will examine how traditional birthing practices, community-driven interventions, and equitable healthcare policies are improving maternal outcomes. By learning from global successes and advocating for culturally competent care, we can create a future where Black mothers everywhere experience pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with dignity, support, and joy.
