The UConn Police Department’s Safety Techniques & Awareness Resource Team (START) is pleased to offer a FREE 4-week women's self-defense program: Surviving Violent Encounters (SVE).
This 12-hour self-defense program will run for 4 consecutive Tuesday nights: February 11th through March 4th; each class starts promptly at 5:30 p.m., ending around 8:30 p.m. Each class will be held at the Husky Suite inside of the UConn Rec Center located on the Storrs campus. The first 3 classes are mandatory to complete the program while the 4th class, which allows participants to take part in hands-on, simulated training, is voluntary. This program is progressive, each class builds upon the previous one. This comprehensive program helps participants identify realistic risks to their safety, evoke discussion of risk assessment and response strategies, and develop physical and mental preparedness skills through repetition and simulation training.
YOU MUST BRING YOUR UCONN ID TO EACH CLASS AND HAVE ACCESS TO THE UCONN REC CENTER TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS 4 WEEK PROGRAM!
For the male members of our community interested in similar courses, please visit the webpage listed below for information on the UConn Police Men's self-defense safety program and our bystander intervention course - We Stand UP: men preventing violence against women.
Class size is limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must attend the first 3 classes in order to participate in the simulated exercises! Online enrollment for this class is through our webpage: Self-Defense Classes | Police Department
