After extensive work, the town of Mansfield’s Hunting Lodge Road is now reopened. This winter, Mansfield’s Department of Public Works (DPW) and contractor Genovesi Construction LLC of Tolland completed replacement of the failing twin 48-inch corrugated metal pipe that carries the Eagleville Brook below Hunting Lodge Road with a 48-inch concrete pipe and an 8-foot wide by 6-foot tall precast concrete box culvert.
The work has closed Hunting Lodge Road, a busy road that runs along the edge of the UConn campus and connects to many Mansfield neighborhoods. Mansfield DPW had identified that the existing corrugated metal pipes were severely deteriorated. The bottom of the existing pipes were non-existent and caused a sinkhole in the road in late April 2024.
The project enlarged the culvert to improve stream connectivity for wildlife and provide a service life of over 75 years. The project cost, funded entirely by the Town, was $42,300 for design and $869,000 for construction.
Come springtime, Genovesi Construction LLC will be adding pavement markings, grading the road shoulder and seeding all disturbed areas. A portion of Hunting Lodge Road was realigned to improve the existing curve through the culverts. Additionally, new signage was added to better indicate the approaching curve.
