Volunteer Opportunities

  • 2/8 2025 Middle School Science Bowl Volunteers Needed

We are recruiting volunteers for the 2025 Middle School Science Bowl, hosted at Smith Middle School in Glastonbury, CT on February 8th, 2025. Please fill out our survey if interested. Volunteers should expect to be at Smith Middle School from 7:30 AM to 5 PM on 2/8, although some volunteers may leave earlier depending on the competition schedule.

Science bowl is a jeopardy-style quiz game in which teams compete head-to-head with a buzzer system to answer questions posed by the volunteer team. The winning team from our event will be sent to the science bowl national finals in Washington, DC to represent Connecticut and Rhode Island. The Connecticut middle school and high school science bowl events have been hosted by UConn for a few decades running.

This event requires many volunteers to run smoothly, including the following in each room:

    ·       Moderator – read questions, acknowledge student buzzes, make judgement calls

    ·       Timekeeper – operate game clock and the clock for individual questions

    ·       Scorekeeper – keeps track of all game points earned, including bonus and penalty

    ·       Room Monitor – enforce rules, ensure students have materials, report misconduct

Any new volunteers can find relevant rules and information about each role on the DOE’s website, but note that DOE uses slightly different volunteering roles than our competition. For example, our moderator role combines the DOE moderator AND question judge roles. New volunteers will be paired in a room with returning volunteers who can answer any day-of questions.

    FOR UCONN STUDENTS:

Smith Middle School is a 35-minute drive from the Storrs UConn campus. Previous events have run smoothly thanks to upperclassmen students volunteering to carpool with students who do not have cars on campus. If you have access to a vehicle, please consider volunteering to carpool with other UConn students, it is a huge help! We will reach out closer to the event to coordinate carpools.

The coordinator team will happily sign any paperwork awarding 10 service hours per student who volunteers for the event. Any volunteers for the High School Science Bowl hosted at UConn will be excused from all of their trainings except the dress rehearsal for attending this event.

If you have any questions regarding volunteering, please reach out at SNEMS.SciBowl@gmail.com.
