Interested in German cultural history? GERM 3251 "German Culture Across Time" provides an overview of major periods in the cultural history of Germany and Central Europe since the Middle Ages. The course showcases the diversity of cultural production throughout the centuries. It will also highlight the historical relationship between Germany and the United States, and Germans and Americans.
This course counts for General Education Content Area 1 and Content Area 4 INT. Seats are still available for Spring 2025.
Course topics include musical, artistic, and literary developments from the Middle Ages to the present, a focus on the history of women’s rights and human rights throughout German history, German Jewish history, the prelude to and impact of the World Wars and the Holocaust, divided Germany and its reunification, the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Germany and its relation to the LGBTQ+ movement in the U.S., migration to and from Europe, and the framework of the European Union within the global context.
