  • 11/12 Implementing the Black and Latino Studies Elective

On Tuesday, November 12, CEPARE will host a panel discussion titled “Implementing the Black and Latino Studies Elective in Connecticut High Schools.”

In December 2021, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont signed a bill requiring all high schools to offer elective courses on African-American, Black, Puerto Rican, and Latino Studies in the 2022-23 academic year. This course, frequently called the “Black and Latino Studies Elective,” affected over 165,000 students in 192 Connecticut public high schools. The panel discussion will examine how the mandate is being implemented, opportunities and challenges in the classroom, and the implications for teaching and learning in Connecticut high schools.

Panelists will include Dr. Shannon Andros (Norwich Free Academy), Daisha Brabham (Southern Connecticut State University), Hannah Cooke (UConn), Dr. Daniel Martinez HoSang (Yale University), and Dr. Jia-Hui Stefanie Wong (Trinity College). The panel will be moderated by Dr. Alexandra Freidus (UConn).

The panel will take place from 4:00-5:15PM in Gentry 142. Those interested in attending should RSVP using the link provided.
