Tips for Preparing for SPRING course registration
- Update your Profile in Student Admin: take a moment to review and update your current phone numbers, personal email addresses, current local address*, and your emergency and missing student contacts.
- Your current local address is the address at which you reside while taking classes (e.g., an off-campus apartment).
- International students must maintain up to date “home country” and “current local” addresses.
- Check if you have a hold on your account that could prevent you from enrolling and make sure you take care of any tasks required to remove the hold. Holds can come from a number of offices and sometimes take a few days to lift. Only the office that has placed your hold can lift it.
- Know your pick time. This is labeled “Enrollment Appointment” in Student Admin and shows when your registration window begins and ends.
- Plan Ahead and Meet with your advisor if your major requires it or if you want to discuss your goals, planned courses and/or requirements. Your advisor’s information is available in Student Admin and/or Nexus. If you have an “advising required” hold on your account, make sure you meet with advisor before your pick time.
- Check your Advisement Report. To run your Standard Advisement Report, navigate to the Academic Progress & Advising tile in Student Admin, and open the 'Advisement Reports' tab. Select the 'Standard' option to run the report. This report will display all requirements to earn your degree, both fulfilled and outstanding, as well as your completed and in-progress coursework. .
- Plan the courses you would like to register for next semester and put them in your shopping cart using a combination of these tools:
- Class Search and Enroll: Within your Student Admin homepage, click on the Manage Classes tile, then select Class Search and Enroll. This is a streamlined search tool that allows you to search by keywords, subject, or topic, and then enroll directly into the selected course.
- Dynamic Class Search: Within your Student Admin homepage, click on the Manage Classes tile, then select Dynamic Class Search. This search tool is helpful for viewing reserve cap information and quickly locating courses with open seats available.
- Course Catalog: Visit catalog.uconn.edu and click on Search Classes. Using the catalog search, you can filter by campus, content area, instruction method, and more.
- Be mindful that you may not be able to automatically enroll in all courses.
- Do you meet all the prerequisites? Prerequisites can include class standing (e.g. Juniors or higher) or courses that must be completed before this class. Be sure to check if you need all the prereqs (indicated with “and”) or some (indicated with “or”). Prereqs are always listed in the course description in the catalog or in the course description link in Student Admin.
- Does the course have a reserve capacity for certain populations of students? Do you meet this criteria? If not, you may need to look at other options.
- Does the course require instructor consent? If so, contact the instructor and briefly explain why you would like to enroll in the course.
- Always have extra courses ready in your Student Admin shopping cart in case you are unable to enroll in your preferred courses when your registration window opens.
- When making changes to your schedule – Swap, don’t drop. Students can use the Swap Classes function when they do not wish to drop a course until a new course has been successfully added. If you are looking to drop a course without enrolling in another course, you would use the Drop Classes function. You’ll be able to make these schedule changes in Student Admin using the Swap Classes or Drop Classes options (under the Manage Classes tile) in your Student Admin account up through the tenth day of classes of the Spring semester. After the tenth day of classes, a drop is considered a withdrawal and will result in a “W” for withdrawal being recorded on your academic record.
