  • 10/9 SHaW's Free Flu Clinics

Fall is here, and so is the start of influenza (flu) season! Keep yourself and our community safe by taking steps to stay healthy this semester. One of the most important steps in preventing flu is to get a flu vaccine, which can reduce flu related illnesses and the risk of serious complications.

Student Health and Wellness (SHaW) will be offering free flu vaccination clinics for Storrs-based UConn students this fall semester.

Have questions or concerns about getting the flu vaccine? Here’s what you need to know:
    • Flu vaccines do not cause flu. The flu vaccine contains an inactive form of the virus that cannot transmit infection. It can take a couple of weeks for the flu vaccine to provide protection so some people may get sick during this period but it is not a result of the vaccine.
    • It is best to get vaccinated by the end of October. However, vaccination after October and throughout the entirety of flu season can still provide protection during the peak of flu season!
    • Immunocompromised individuals and people with egg or other allergies can still receive a flu vaccine. Let your provider know about any medical conditions or allergies prior to vaccination, so they can choose an appropriate vaccine for you or refer you to someone who can.
    • The flu vaccine does not protect again COVID-19. They are both caused by different viruses. However, COVID-19 vaccines are available by scheduling a regular immunization appointment.
