We are conducting a research study investigating the relationship between oral contraceptive use and its effects on bone health for individuals engaging in different exercise types (endurance-trained vs. resistance-trained vs. sedentary individuals).
Who is eligible?
- Females, 18-35 years old, who have not yet gone through menopause
- Endurance runners (>25 miles/week), resistance-trained individuals (>150 minutes/week), and non-habitual exercisers (run < 3 miles/week and resistance train < 30 minutes/week)
- Must have a regular menstrual cycle
- Oral contraceptive users and non-users
What does participation involve?
- One laboratory visit, ~1 hour, consisting of the following:
- DXA scan (~10 minutes)
- Fasted blood draw (<1.5 tbsp) (~5 minutes)
- Resting metabolic rate (~20 minutes)
- Dietary analysis (~20 minutes)
- Demographic questionnaires (~5 minutes)
Participants will receive their bone density results, fat-free mass values, and metabolic rate results.
This study is approved by the University of Connecticut IRB (protocol # H23-0723).
