Are you looking for a W course? Do you enjoy reading plays? DRAM 4135W might be for you.
This course explores the act of adapting theatre for the theatre. Studying plays and their adaptations—such as The Octoroon and An Octoroon, Miss Julie and Mies Julie, and The Cherry Orchard and The Orchard (After Chekhov)—we will ask what draws artists to speak with and through existing texts. Adaptation has been variously theorized as an act of love, of disruption, and of political reclamation. We will consider these dimensions and more, and we will engage in our own acts of adaptation, creating 10-minute theatre pieces inspired by existing works of theatre.
