    YSSS Hybrid Teacher Summer Position

    The Young Scholars Senior Summit (YSSS) is a three-week summer program at the University of Connecticut for academically talented students enrolled in the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars program. It has been designed to provide young people with opportunities to participate in creative projects and investigations under the supervision of university mentors. The YSSS Hybrid Teacher will be responsible for supervising and supporting the students while they work independently on their mentorship sitework. 

    The YSSS Hybrid Teacher will assist mentors, counselors, and YSSS staff in supporting the development of scholarly skills and attitudes necessary for high-level work on a university campus. The Hybrid Teacher will report to the YSSS Executive Program Director. 

    The YSSS students will spend from about 9:00 am to 4:00 pm each weekday at either in-person or hybrid mentorship sites. For the in-person site, the students will work in labs and workspaces on campus with their mentors from 9:00am to 3:00-4:00pm Monday through Friday throughout the 3-week program. For the hybrid site, the students will join their mentors in labs and workspaces on campus from 9:00-10:00am to 3:00-4:00pm two to three days per week throughout the 3-week program. On the days the students are not in person at their sites, they will be expected to complete independent work and meet with their mentors for up to an hour virtually. The YSSS Hybrid Teacher will work approximately 28 hours per week. The daily hours will vary, but the individual will be working while the students are at their mentorship sites from 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday.

    YSSS Hybrid Teacher Expectations

    The YSSS Hybrid Teacher plays an integral role in student learning through guidance of the independent student learning experience and ongoing contact with individual students and small groups. 

    Each of the YSSS students will be assigned to a counselor for the duration of the program. The YSSS Hybrid Teacher and the counselor will communicate on a regular basis to discuss mentorship site progress and specific independent activities for students. 

    Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Help to establish an educational community and keep order within the hybrid classroom.

    2. Assist and advise individual students; provide guidance on accessing UConn resources including the library and downloading of specific software.

    3. Coordinate and supervise YSSS students’ independent learning by maintaining regular contact with the counselors.

    4. Attend the Academic Showcase on July 26, 2024 

    5. Enforce the rules of the YSSS program and the university.

    6. Behave in a manner that will not have a detrimental effect upon the university or the program participants. The YSSS Hybrid Teacher must be a positive role model for the participants.

    7. Provide a daily update to the YSSS Executive Program Director regarding students’ independent learning progress. 

    8. Be attentive to the personal well-being of the students in such areas as safety, security, and emergency situations.

     

    Minimum Qualifications 

    1. Experience working with students in classroom, camp, or other extra-curricular setting.

    2. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish good working relationships with individuals involved with YSSS program.

    3. Ability to navigate the UConn website to assist students in accessing university resources (e.g., software, journal articles).

    4. Ability to resolve minor interpersonal conflicts.

    5. Ability to work independently and regularly exercise judgement regarding well-being of students. 

    6. Good organizational skills. 

    7. Good written and oral communication skills.


    Preferred Qualifications

    1. Bachelor's Degree in a related area (e.g., education, social sciences, human relations).

    2. One to three years of classroom/counseling experience.

    3. Previous experience working with teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17. 

     

    Appointment Terms
    This is a temporary, 3-week, full-time position from July 8, 2024 to July 26, 2024 on the UConn Storrs campus. The position pays a stipend of $1,428 for the 3 weeks of work. Attendance at YSSS staff orientation on Friday, July 5, 2024, is mandatory.
