  • 3/11 Conservation Genomics Research Opp. - Apply today

The Biodiversity and Conservation Genetics (BCG) Training Program, led by the Institute for Systems Genomics, in collaboration with research laboratories within EEB and MCB, is currently inviting applications for its third cohort. This year-long initiative, starting in the summer of 2024 and concluding in the spring of 2025, offers a unique credit or pay-based training and research opportunity.

The field of conservation genetics is increasingly important to restoration and conservation strategies for threatened species. The program is designed for highly motivated undergraduates who are eager to gain skills in genomics, develop computational tools, and create genetic resources for species at risk. Trainees will engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes work in academic research labs, and collaboration with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government agencies engaged in conservation efforts.

Since 2021, the program has successfully trained 12 students in conservation genomics, including skills in bioinformatics, computer programming, STEM research, and scientific writing. The BCG program has also developed two specialized software tools to expedite the analysis of genetic data and has generated genetic resources for 18 endangered species across North America and beyond.

No research or coding experience required. Students from any major can apply. Students from historically marginalized groups are encouraged to apply.
