  • 1/17 Earthtones: Eastern Orthodox Music and Chant

This spring semester Earthtones Vocal Ensemble (MUSI 1006, 1 credit) will be singing songs, hymns and chants from the Eastern Orthodox Church. Rooted in Byzantine chant, these musical gems have a long history while adapting over the centuries to the present day.  The course will culminate in the singing of a Vespers Service at the beautiful Greek Orthodox Chapel on Dog Lane, an intimate setting with beautiful iconography and exquisite acoustics. This is a rare opportunity for those interested in the music of different faiths, or just simply curious, to experience first-hand this unique musical tradition, typically described as serene, meditative, and mystical.

Earthtones does not require a formal audition; however, since the music is sung a cappella (without instruments), those participating must be able to sing in tune. Basic music reading is helpful, but not necessary.

The ensemble meets on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:30 PM in MUSI 108.  We encourage you to join us as we explore this incredibly beautiful music tradition.
