Position Description for SASP Academic Mentors

The Student Athlete Success Program (SASP) is looking for graduate and doctoral students to join our Academic Mentoring staff.  Academic Mentors are employed as peer educators, helping students develop their independent learning skills and aid in their transition to the University through facilitating establishment and/or enhancement of effective course management.

Academic Mentors will help students interpret course objectives, understand and implement advanced reading strategies for comprehension and retention, assist with time management and other organizational strategies, and develop and practice learning skills to expand their educational practice.

Ideal candidates will be conscientious, personable graduate students, with an unwavering commitment to academic integrity and firm adherence to University, SASP, FERPA, and NCAA policy. Academic Mentors will attend mandatory training in all required policies and will attend weekly supervisory meetings with the SASP Learning Services Staff where student progress and academic planning will be monitored.

While a specific academic background and discipline is not required, a broad knowledge of general education coursework and/or a foundation in special education, counseling, psychology, or proficiency in a foreign language is valued.

Mentors are paid $18.40/hour.  Hours will be relatively consistent each week with initial scheduling based on mutual availability of the mentor and student-athlete. Sessions typically take place during late afternoons / evenings and some weekends. Scheduling flexibility is appreciated whenever possible.
