Research

  • Get ahead as a STEM undergrad researcher

Dear UConn 2nd & 3rd year students: You may be eligible for an intensive, multi-semester research and graduate school preparation experience here at UConn within the CAPS Research Office.

The CAPS Research Office prepares first-generation, low-income, and historically underrepresented students for M.S. and Ph.D. studies in STEM disciplines. Students are immersed in the following year-round:

    • faculty-mentored research projects, including fully-funded summer component
    • holistic advising
    • professional development
    • structured, step-by-step guidance for graduate school preparation
    • cultural, community engagement year-round.

This fall semester, students with four or more semesters remaining at UConn for undergraduate study can apply to be CAPS Research Scholar Candidates, which will begin with the spring 2024 semester.

Upon completion of the spring 2024 semester, students may be named CAPS Research Scholars or McNair Scholars based on their level of active participation in all aspects of the holistic curriculum.

There are two ways for students to be eligible:

    • first generation to college from a low income household (chart on the application)

    and/or

    • self-identify as an underrepresented racial or ethnic group in higher education (listed on the application).

Therefore, students do not have to self identify as an underrepresented racial or ethnic group in order to be eligible.

Students with majors spanning across CLAS, CAHNR, Business, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Education can pursue STEM-focused research projects!
