Anthropology 3704W: Experimental Archaeology

The field of experimental archaeology conducts experiments to gain insights that can be applied to reconstruct past human behavior preserved in the material archaeological record. This course devotes one class period per week to conducting different types of archaeological experiments aimed at replicating past technologies, investigating site formation processes, reconstructing the histories and biases of archaeological materials, and the effectiveness of sampling strategies and analytical models used by archaeologists.

Anthropology 4510: The Neanderthals

Students will learn about:
1. the origin, rise, & demise of the Neanderthals in Eurasia between 400,000 and 30,000 years ago,
2. the biological, cultural, technological, & behavioral evolution of the Neanderthals as understood through evolutionary genetics, palaeoanthropology, archaeology, human behavioral ecology, chronometric dating, & models of Neanderthal-Homo sapiens interaction & interbreeding,
3. these topics via lectures, videos, readings, discussions, lab exercises, & authentic artifacts.
