    UConn Upward Bound/ConnCAP English, Math & Science Tutor(s)

    Upward Bound/ConnCAP (Connecticut Collegiate Awareness & Preparation Program) is searching for a ConnCAP Enrichment ENGLISH, MATH & SCIENCE Tutors to assist Naugatuck High School 10th-12th graders. The tutor will be providing homework help and engaging students with fun, interactive enrichment, and literacy activities. Upward Bound/ConnCAP Enrichment Tutor should be well-rounded and willing to work with a diverse range of cultures, nationalities, and backgrounds. An Upward Bound/ConnCAP tutor is responsible for leading small group support for students to help them better understand homework concepts and provide support with assignments. Their duties include helping with study strategies, note taking, key concepts, review classroom assignments.

    In addition, ConnCAP Enrichment Tutor should possess the following attributes and skills:

    • Ability to communicate orally and written providing accurate documentation to student progress, including
    • student weaknesses, strengths, and points of interest
    • Ability to work in a small group setting while leading academic improvement sessions
    • Ability to work weekends for pre-scheduled academic/social student events and workshops
    • Assisting students with homework, projects, SAT prep, papers and other academic tasks
    • Meet with ConnCAP Program Advisor virtually or on campus weekly to discuss student development and
    • strategize best support practices and training
    • Ability to use ethical practices for confidential communication about students
    • Providing positive support and encouragement
    • Demonstrating academic best practices for specific subjects and researching academic resources with
    • students
    • Tutors must provide their own transportation to and from worksites ( Naugatuck High School)

     

    Special skills preferred:

    • Demonstrate strong academic performance in either field within English/Literature,  S.T.E.M. (Science,
    • Technology, Engineering, Math) or linguistics (English and/or Spanish)
    • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with students fostering safe space and encouragement
    • Available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 2:00 pm- 4:00 pm starting September
