  • Summer Research Work Opportunity

    The Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Connecticut is looking for a hard-working detail-oriented student to support research on reading disabilities like dyslexia. This position will begin Summer 2022 (May – Aug). The focus of the position is administering neuropsychological assessments to children, administrative work, and supporting planning for the research team, BRAIN Camp. BRAIN Camp combines reading intervention, research, and summer camp activities. Camp will run on UConn’s campus from July 11th till August 12th lasting 5 weeks. Approximately 40 Campers will attend, between the ages of 8-11. The campers will: (1) participate in reading or math lessons; (2) participate in fun summer activities; and (3) take part in brain scan sessions to see how instruction changes the brain.

    This part of the project is supervised by Dr. Fumiko Hoeft, Director of BrainLENS at UConn.

    The primary duties of the student worker include: • Attend trainings needed for administering neuropsychological assessments prior to the camp • Administer screening assessments to children prior to and during the camp • Organize project records and materials • Enter data accurately and efficiently into electronic databases • Perform general office work (e.g. filing, photocopying, scanning) • Score standardized student assessments accurately and efficiently using specific scoring instructions

    Minimum Qualifications: • Currently pursuing a degree in education, psychology, or a related field • Extremely detail-oriented • Strong work ethic • Ability to (a) following directions, (b) work collaboratively with a team, (c) work independently, and (d) solve problems effectively • Ability to work at least 10 hours per week prior to the camp • Be available during the camp period July 11- Aug 12, weekdays (ability to work 20-30 hours per week) • Commitment to work through Summer 2022

    Preferred Qualifications: • Prior research experience • Experience working with children • Experience working with children in a camp setting

    Appointment Terms: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with work experience and skills.
