Between 2010 and 2020, population growth in the United States reached one of its lowest points in history and was only slightly higher than the growth rate in the decade following the Great Depression. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the situation; the U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2021 estimated that in the past year the population grew by only 0.1%, described as “the lowest rate since the nation’s founding.”

Higher education has already begun feeling these effects. A recent article in The Washington Post reported continued declines in undergraduate enrollment since 2019 that are likely related not only to the pandemic, but also to how the college-aged population regards the value of a college education. However, one positive is that this trend is not uniform. Some historically black colleges and universities have reported soaring enrollments.

Taken together, these developments pose questions about future enrollment and the consequences for academic disciplines. To discuss the implications of demographic change for International Studies, the International Studies Association has invited the following panelists:

Cameron Thies - Dean of James Madison College and Micigan State University Foundation Professor, United States
Nizar Messari - Associate Professor, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Al Akhawayn University, Morocco
Jessica Lillian De Alba Ulloa - Research Professor, Universidad Anahuac Mexico, School of Global Studies
Jeremy Youde - Dean, College of Liberal Arts, University of Minnesota, Delouth, United States
Gigi Gocek - Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Education and Professor of Political Science, Dominican University of California, United States *CHAIR*
