  • 2/24 Conducting Research in the Authoritarian Field

FREE ONLINE SEMINAR: Thursday February 24, 2022 11:00 AM EST

The last years have seen an increasing demand for methodological rigor and transparency in qualitative research, as well as for resources to advance and support field research. Drawing on the burgeoning literature on the topic, as well as on Dr. Adele de Sordi's direct experience in authoritarian contexts, this talk offers a synthetic reflection on several aspects of field research. These include ethical dilemmas, methodological challenges, as well as reflections on the practical aspects of planning, particularly during a pandemic.

Dr. Sordi will draw on her field research in Kazakhstan to provide a series of tips and lessons learned on: qualitative interviews with high-level respondents, (including considerations on anonymization criteria and reflecting on the researcher's positionality in the interview process), conducting surveys and experiments in contexts where trust is difficult to negotiate, dealing with the problem of not being able to reach the field and the pros and cons of phone/skype/zoom interviews.
