  • New Archaeology Course: Technology and Society

ANTH 3095, Technology and Society: Archaeological Perspectives.  Spring 2022, Professor Christian Tryon, Tuesday and Thursday 11-12:15, Oak Hall Room 401.

In this seminar you will examine the concept of technology in archaeological and more recent contexts, looking at relationships between ‘technology’ and ‘nature,’ and some of the ways that technologies are incorporated into our daily rituals, practice, and identity.  We will consider how technological innovation occurs and how technological practices are transmitted across generations and space, will conduct hands-on examination and manufacture of some of those durable and perishable material technologies that are traditionally the focus of archaeologists (e.g., items of stone, clay, wood, or fiber), and will engage contemporary use and interpretation of ‘things’ and the extent to which various technologies shape our everyday lives.
