Speech Perception in Adults – Human Subjects Requested

Volunteers are needed to participate in a research study titled “Determinants of phonetic
category structure.”  The purpose of this study is to examine language processing in
individuals with and without language impairment.

Native English speakers with and without language impairment who are between 18-35
years of age are invited to participate.  The research takes place in 1-2 sessions
approximately 1-2 hours long at the UConn Laboratory for Spoken Language Processing on
the Storrs campus. Participants will listen to speech sounds or read words on a screen and
will be asked to indicate what they hear or see. Participants may also complete language
assessments and a questionnaire. Some participants will have an MRI of their brain while
performing language tasks in the scanner. Participants will receive monetary compensation
for participation and will also be provided with scores on standardized language tests if
requested and a picture of their brain.
