The Department of Dramatic Arts is pleased to offer a new course in Spring 2022. This course is open to all majors.

DRAM 3995: Special Topics: Palestinian Drama and Literature

    Tues./Thurs. 11:00-12:15

    Professor Gary English

    Course Description:

This course provides a critical study of drama, short stories and poetry by modern Palestinian writers and examines the impact of theatre within the Palestinian and Arab world as a public art form. Beginning with the poetry and short stories of Ghassan Kanafani and Mahmoud Darwish, as foundations to the development of theatre within the lands of historic Palestine, we will explore how various historical and cultural forces shape drama, literature and politics. Drama shapes culture and culture shapes drama. This interchange is an active ongoing process and we will consider drama as an embodied art form that establishes a foundation of national and cultural identity. Finally, we will examine how the drama and literature of these writers impacts various social forces and movements including humanitarianism, women's rights, and national political movements.
