  • Mentoring Program Opportunity for Women in STEM

Are you a woman majoring in a STEM field and interested in becoming a mentor or being mentored by someone in your STEM field of study?

WiSTEM is an initiative designed to support underclasswomen pursuing STEM degrees through the mentorship of their upperclasswomen peers, and we are searching for a dedicated group of interested and excited mentors and mentees to get involved!

In a nutshell, mentees will be matched with a mentor who can provide personal support, academic advice, and knowledge about career development. WiSTEM hopes to prepare our mentees for a successful outcome in STEM at UConn by addressing possible obstacles, including gateway (“weed out”) courses, GPA recovery, social balance, access to research labs, and communication with professors. Ultimately we want to enhance the role of women in STEM at UConn through discussion and education about women’s issues, gender equity, and stereotypes, and allow these women to form connections with each other.

    Mentor Qualifications:

    • Be a current UConn undergraduate sophomore, junior or senior woman who will be enrolled on the Storrs campus for the entire Fall 2021/Spring 2022 academic year.

    • Have a minimal GPA of 3.00.

    • Must be committed to assisting and spending time with your mentee(s).

    • Must demonstrate a continued interest in pursuing a major/career in the STEM fields.

    • Must show progress towards academic excellence.

    • Must be able to attend a 3-hour long mentor training workshop on 10/8/21 (3:00-6:00 EST). Food will be provided

     Mentee Qualifications:

    • Be a current UConn undergraduate first or second-year woman who will be enrolled on the Storrs campus for the entire Fall 2021/Spring 2022 academic year.

    • Must be able to attend a 3-hour long mentee workshop on 10/15/21 (3:00-6:00 EST). Food will be provided

    • Must be willing to coordinate with the mentor and participate in mandatory scheduled events

This program contains two parts: the mentor/mentee relationship and group meetings with other mentor pairs. This is a full-year program with various workshops designed to provide both mentors and mentees with resources to flourish in your STEM fields such as professional development and connection to academic resources.
