  • From UCPD: New Cannabis/Marijuana Laws in CT

From UConn Police Chief Gerald Lewis Jr.

    --

As we embark on a new school year, I wanted to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are aware of Connecticut's new laws regarding cannabis and marijuana Laws.  Here is some helpful information regarding the new laws.

When did the laws become effective?

On July 1, 2021, Connecticut became the 19th state to legalize adult, recreational use of cannabis/marijuana. The new law allows individuals aged 21 and older to possess or consume up to 1.5 ounces (42.5 grams) of “cannabis plant material.”

The new laws also allow up to 5 ounces (141.7 grams) to be in a locked container in a home, or in the trunk or locked glove box in a person’s vehicle. There are a series of fines and other measures for violators, including mandatory referral to youth services bureaus for second-time juvenile offenders.

The officers of the UConn Police Department have been briefed on the new cannabis laws, which will assist in partnering with our University community to provide the safest environment in which to live, work and learn.

What if I misrepresent my age to purchase cannabis?

Any person who misrepresents their age for the purpose of purchasing cannabis/marijuana or uses or exhibits an operator’s license belonging to any other person shall for: (1) a first offense, be fined not more than two hundred fifty dollars ($250) and (2) any subsequent offense, be guilty of a class D misdemeanor.

What are the policies on campus?

Although Connecticut state law permits the use of medical and recreational marijuana (age 21 years or older), the use, possession, and/or cultivation of marijuana remains a crime under federal law.

As a recipient of federal funding, the University is required to prohibit the use and/or possession of all federally classified controlled substances, including marijuana. Therefore, the possession or use of marijuana in any form, even if accompanied by a medical prescription, is prohibited on all University property and/or during any University activity.

Responsibilities of Community Life: The Student Code will continue to prohibit the use, possession, selling, distributing, or manufacturing of illegal drugs and paraphernalia. These restrictions are inclusive of On-Campus Housing and are reflected in the 2021-22 On-Campus Housing Contract.

I hope this information is helpful. Looking forward to a great year.
