  • 9/8 Psych Colloquium/Tenure Talk:Dr.Ian Stevenson

The next psychology colloquium is scheduled for Wednesday September 8th at 3:30pm in BOUS A106. Dr. Ian Stevenson from the Psychological Sciences Department of UConn will be presenting his tenure talk titled “Modeling Synapses from Spiking Data.” We hope that you will join us!

Abstract: Synaptic plasticity underlies learning, memory, and recovery from injury. However, most of what we know about synapses is based on recording intracellularly in slices of brain tissue. In this talk, I'll give an overview of progress we've made trying to understand synapses in awake, behaving animals using data from large-scale extracellular recordings. With the latest techniques experimentalists can collect the spiking activity of thousands of neurons simultaneously, and, in many cases, just by chance, these recordings sample pairs of neurons that are synaptically connected. I'll describe how we detect these connections, some of the approaches we've been working on to model short-term and long-term plasticity, and some of the new questions these data analysis techniques can allow us to ask.

The remaining colloquium scheduled is listed below. All talks will take place at 3:30pm on Wednesdays unless otherwise noted. The mode (online/in-person) of each talk may differ, please see future announcements.
