Career, Internship & Fellowship

  • Interested in Cooking and Community Health?

Sow, Grow, Savor is an intergenerational edible gardening program established with the support of a UConn IDEA Grant last summer (2020) by Sarah Platt '22.

We are currently looking for UConn students —gardeners, cooks, eaters, readers, writers, creators, explorers— to help us grow the program and further our impact on shoreline communities.

Our activities are designed to support identity formation and prosocial behavior among Madison youth, as well as increased generatively and improved mental health and physical performance in older adults. We hope to fill the need for intergenerational play and creative learning, bridging different generations through multi-sensory activities.

Participants of all ages celebrate the season’s bounty together by developing recipes that incorporate the ripe produce they’ve grown in their home gardens or helped grow in the Madison Senior Center raised-bed garden. They also attend virtual and in-person meetings with local farmers, Master Gardeners, and chefs. We hope to compile the recipes shared by our participants and guest speakers into a community cookbook to be sold during a fundraiser this September.

The following volunteer internship positions are available as of 7/2/2021:

    • Staff writer (preferably Nutritional Science or Biological Sciences-related major) covering nutritional benefits of seasonal produce through bi-weekly blog posts ex. Exploring Current Research on the Health Benefits of Rhubarb
    • Advertising & marketing manager (ideally has experience with Aurora WordPress but not required)
    • Older buddy to a younger participant (preferably HDFS major or minor)
    • Cookbook illustrator/cookbook graphic designer

In-person volunteers must have reliable transportation and live within a 50-mile radius of Madison, CT to participate. Remote volunteers can reside out of state.
