    Temporary University Specialist (Part-time Teacher/Instructor)

    Neag School of Education

    The Special Education program in the Neag School of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology, in collaboration with the Department of Psychological Sciences, has position openings for Reading Instructors. Hired candidates will be primarily assigned to a project called BRAIN Camp (Bridging Reading and Intervention with Neuroscience). BRAIN Camp is an exciting summer camp during which participants will receive academic instruction, participate in fun camp activities, as well as participate in neuroimaging activities. BRAIN Camp is scheduled to run weekdays from June through August, 2021.The goal of the project is to better understand how teaching affects reading on a neural level. This will help us create efficient reading interventions that work well for struggling readers.

    Reading Instructors will teach research-based intervention programs to children between the ages of 8 and 11, in groups of five, as well as be responsible for other rotating duties throughout the day. Training will be provided for Instructors this spring. In addition, there may be opportunities to work across other research projects.

    BRAIN Camp is a collaboration between UConn and Haskins Laboratory, a Yale-based center that studies children’s reading using brain scanning technologies. At UConn, the project directors are Devin Kearns, Ph.D., an associate professor of special education in the Department of Educational Psychology, and Fumiko Hoeft, MD. Ph.D., Professor and Director of the Brain Imaging Research Center.

     Instructors will be required to:

    • Participate in professional development/training to learn the evidence-based reading intervention programs
    • Implement the intervention as designed by the researchers, following an explicit script verbatim, for three teaching sessions per day, 60 minutes per lesson
    • Follow standardized procedures for all camp activities
    • Build rapport with students at the beginning of the intervention and throughout
    • Work on campus, weekdays, from approximately 8am to 4pm
    • Provide support to other research teams as needed

     

    Administrative duties:

    • Complete and securely store daily project-specific records of all work with students, including audio recordings of all intervention sessions, logs of lessons completed, and other data  
    • Maintain all classroom materials
    • Maintain communication with the project coordinator

     

    Organizational responsibilities:

    • Prepare and review materials for intervention, research meetings, and other situations as necessary
    • Maintain effective systems when borrowing materials for lessons – return all materials after use to the proper area in good condition, and notify the project coordinator of any damaged or missing items
    • Demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and the ability to problem solve

     

    Minimum Qualifications

    · Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, or a related field

    · Experience teaching general or special education in Grades K-6

    · Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills

    · Experience working with Word and knowledge of Excel

    · Proficiency with Zoom or a similar online learning technology

    · The ability to work 20-40 hours per week between 8am and 4pm

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    · Elementary teaching or special education certification

    · Experience administering standardized tests to children ages 8-11

    · Experience doing human-subjects research, especially in schools or communities

    Appointment Terms

    This temporary position is approximately 20 to 40 hours per week. Compensation is commensurate with work experience and skills. This is a part time position with the possibility of extension dependent on program needs and available funding
