  • 4/3 Join UCSB for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

UConn Swing and Blues is hosting a showing of the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, starring Oscar nominees Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. The film follows Gertrude "Ma" Rainey through a recording session as her white management attempts to "control the uncontrollable 'Mother of Blues.'" Ma Rainey was an early blues singer who during a five year span recorded over one hundred pieces, including "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" in 1927. She recorded with the likes of Louis Armstrong and was known for her powerful voice.
