Volunteer Opportunities

  • 2/27 Middle School Science Bowl: Volunteer from Home

    Volunteering opportunity from home!

The CT Middle School Science Bowl is looking for volunteers to help make our event run as smoothly as possible! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you can participate from the comfort of your own home! This event cannot run without the help of many wonderful volunteers, so please consider giving some of your time to help out. See below for event details, and please fill out the attached Google Form. Even if you cannot attend because you have graduated or have a prior commitment, we would appreciate it if you still filled out the form. Your prompt feedback will help us put together the best team of volunteers that we can! Please fill out this survey by February 1st, 2021. If you’ve already filled out the form, we do not need a second response.

The link below will take you to the volunteer survey:

NOTE: There will not be any science demos because the science bowl is virtual this year. :(

    VOLUNTEERING ROLES

There are a number of roles that our volunteers will be asked to fill. There are approximately 32 teams attending, and we need volunteers to fill a Zoom session for each team. For each room we will need:

    • Moderator/Timekeeper

      • Reads questions and keeps track of time allotted per question

    • Chat Scorekeeper

      • Keeps track of score and updates chat after every change of score: “Question 1 - 4”

    • Recognizer

      • Keep an eye on competitors, call on those who raise their hands, watch for cheating, electronic devices, etc.

      • Keep track of the score on a separate piece of paper, upload scores to the master spreadsheet at the end of the round.

    • Chatzy

      • Liaison between coordinators and each individual room. Communicates issues/challenges with coordinators and helps synchronize play between rooms.

    • Zoom/IT Manager

      • Provide coaches/teams with zoom links, manage any technical issues, and coordinate entry and exit from conference rooms.

Please see the following presentation for explanations about the updated virtual roles: Volunteer Training Document.

    TRAINING SESSIONS

Volunteer training sessions will be offered virtually, both by the National Science Bowl (NSB) and our leadership team near the event date. Recordings of NSB training sessions will be available to all volunteers over Google Drive.  One Zoom training session will be required for all volunteers because all the roles are new!

    Available Training Dates:

    • Monday, February 22nd (5 - 6:30 PM) - Zoom

    • Tuesday, February 23rd (5 - 6:30 PM) - Zoom

    EVENT SETUP

The evening before the event (Friday 2/26/21) we will meet in a master zoom call at 6:30 PM to begin, then break off into smaller groups to test the links and run practice rounds. Volunteers will be asked to set up and test their Zoom conference rooms with the links provided by the admin team.

    THANK YOU!

Once again, thank you for the time that you have dedicated to this program in the past. Middle school students depend on volunteers like you to make these events a possibility. We could not do this without you!

Also note that this event is a great resume-builder and is perfect for organizations that require you to have service hours.

Please email connmssb@gmail.com with any questions! Thank you!
