  • 12/16 Health Research Program: Call for Summer 2021

The application for faculty to participate in the Health Research Program is now open! This initiative is aimed at facilitating connections between UConn Health researchers and UConn undergraduates with interests in health and the biomedical sciences. This program is coordinated by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) with support from the Offices of the Provost and the Vice President for Research, along with the Deans of the Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine.

If you would be interested in mentoring a UConn undergraduate researcher beginning this summer, we invite you to develop a research project for inclusion in this program. The program’s focus on supporting students’ sustained engagement in research projects is reflected in its structure: full-time, 10-week summer opportunities will continue part-time during academic year 2021-22, contingent on satisfactory summer progress and continued faculty and student interest. Financial support for research supplies and for summer student stipends are offered as part of this program.

The OUR will develop an opportunity description and application based on the information you submit via an online form. You will be asked to describe the project (including a brief contingency plan for remote summer work), your mentorship and supervision plan, the qualifications and application materials you seek, and parameters for the project's scope and continuation. You will review the applications submitted for your research opportunity, identify and interview top candidates, and select the student you wish to offer a research opportunity. Please note that this program is intended to foster new faculty-student matches; you may not select a student who is already involved in your research endeavors. Other OUR funding programs are available to support UConn students already involved in research with you.

Further details, including a timeline for the application and selection process, are available on the program website for faculty. Interested faculty are asked to review the program information there and submit the online Research Opportunity Description Form by Wednesday, Dec. 16. We reserve the right not to post a submitted research opportunity should we receive more faculty requests than we can accommodate or should the opportunity described not conform to the parameters of the program.

Please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Rowena Grainger, HRP Program Manager, at rowena.grainger@uconn.edu with any questions. We look forward to expanding available opportunities for undergraduates to contribute to and learn from the innovative research you are pursuing.
