Systemic racism is one of the most pressing issues facing the United States and other highly-racialized societies today. This graduate seminar provides students from a variety of professional schools, departments, programs, and backgrounds with an opportunity to gain a general and multi-disciplinary understanding of racism within the rich tradition of African American social thought that views racism directly and explicitly as a highly-organized system of “race”-based oppression. The course offers insights into the organization, dynamics, and persistence of racism as a central and enduring phenomenon around which the United States and other modern societies are organized and evolve. Through that systemic racism lens students will learn what systemic racism is, how it works, and how it impacts every aspect of the lives of racially oppressed people; and will apply what they are learning, more specifically, to better understand and address systemic racism in the substantive focus areas of their choosing.
