What are Alternative Breaks?
Alternative Breaks are service-learning experiences designed to heighten participants’ awareness of critical social issues, enhance their individual growth, and prepare them for lifelong social action. Each weekend or weeklong trip integrates service, reflection and education and focuses on topics as varied as poverty, hunger, housing, healthcare, and more!
How does the Alternative Break trip to Detroit differ from other Alternative Breaks?
The Alternative Break trip to Detroit focuses on three primary topics: Urban Development, Education, and Civic Engagement. Service in this program will explore the connections between these three topics through work with several local nonprofits; such as food banks, urban development charities, environmental justice organizations, and work in school and after-school programs. Concluding the trip there will be two post-trip meetings and many resources will be shared to encourage the continuation of civic engagement on the UConn campus. In addition, the Detroit Alternative Break is one of two big trips, meaning that there will be a total of 54 individuals on the trip! This is an incredible experience to connect with peers who have a passion for service, and are interested in developing their knowledge of critical social issues in Detroit.
