  • Research Study on Musicians

    What is this study about?

We want to understand the hearing characteristics of people who are routinely exposed to loud noise or music.

    Who can participate?

Any individual involved in music ensembles at the University of Connecticut who is between 18-28 years of age, is a native English speaker, has normal hearing, and no history of neurological disorder is eligible to participate.

What will I have to do?

Participants will come to the Phillips Communication Sciences Building for three rounds of testing, spaced 1-2 months apart. Each round will involve multiple (2-3) visits to the lab lasting between 30 minutes to 2.5 hours. Participation will include hearing assessments, blood samples, and noise exposure assessments. To assess daily noise exposure, participants will wear a small device for ~1 week/round that measures exposure to music/noise across daily listening activities and complete a journal on their activities.

As compensation for participating in the study, participants will receive up to $250.

The research is conducted under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Tufts and Dr. Erika Skoe of the Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Department.
