This winter break trip to Los Jazmines, Costa Rica (located near Upala in the Alajuela Province) focuses on Community Development. During this two-week long alternative break, participants will be staying in the local school; they will learn about community development while interacting with and serving the rural community of Los Jazmines through build-projects and participant-led educational workshops for the youth members of the community. The trip will be continuing their partnership with Reto Juvenil Internacional (RJI). The specific projects and workshops are determined on a yearly basis as a result of a community needs assessment run through RJI. UConn students in the past have built a healthcare center, storage and new bathrooms for the school, and making the school wheel-chair accessible. UConn students have also painted murals for the school. This year we will be working on building a kindergarten classroom, as well as painting some more murals. We'll also spend time with many local youth community members through educational and recreational workshops. We will be engaging in dialogues about our experiences and reflecting on all that this trip brings our attention to.
