The Condemnation of Blackness: The Past Meets the Present

Dr. Muhammad is the author of The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America, recently published by Harvard University Press. He is an associate editor of the Journal of American History and is working on a history of the racial politics surrounding Prohibition-era "tough-on-crime" laws. He is a great-grandson of Elijah Muhammad, founder of the Nation of Islam, and the son of Ozier Muhammad, a photographer for the New York Times. Dr. Muhammad is the director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. A reception will follow after the lecture.
