  • 4/14 Lecture: A Look Genetically Modified Foods

The Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UConn, presents “It Came from the Grocery Shelf! A Look Under the Hood at Genetically Modified Foods,” a lecture by Dr. Gerald Berkowitz, Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture at UConn. The lecture will be held in the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History on the UConn Storrs Campus, Sunday, April 14 at 3 pm.

As the old saying goes “you are what you eat” and today’s consumers want to know what is in their food, where it comes from, and how it was produced. Advances in biotechnology have made many of the food products we use grow faster, be more pest and drought resistant, and may even increase nutritional values in the future. However, there is still uncertainty among the general public on what genetically modified foods are, if they are safe in terms of human health, and their impact on the environment as well as the sustainability of our food production systems.

Join Dr. Gerald A. Berkowitz, Professor of Horticulture from UConn’s Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture, and learn what genetically modified foods are and what food products we eat that are genetically modified. He will also explore both the advantages and controversies concerning their use and production within the context of the “politics” of food.

This program is open to adults and children ages 10 and above. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The program is free and advanced registration is not required. To contact the Museum, visit http://www.cac.uconn.edu/mnhcurrentcalendar.html or call 860-486-4460. Find us on Facebook.
