  • 4/10 Lecture: End Homophobia in Sports

    Wednesday, April 10, 2013
    12pm - 1:30pm

Rainbow Center @ Student Union 403

    Free and open to all

The Rainbow Center's Out to Lunch Lecture Series continues with a presentation by Patrick Burke, entitled, "You Can Play: The Fight to End Homophobia in Sports."

Burke will discuss his journey from athlete to ally. As someone who grew up isolated from the LGBT community, but firmly entrenched in the sports world, he was never made aware of the struggles LGBT athletes faced until his own brother came out in 2007. Since then, he has worked hard to be an ally, but also to share with other straight athletes his experiences, to save them from making the mistakes.

Burke is the co-founder of You Can Play Project. He is a scout for the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL, and previously worked for Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, and New England Patriots. He was the 2010 Outsports.com Sports Person of the Year, and was recently named to the list of the 100 People of Power and Influence in Hockey for his work with You Can Play. Burke graduated from the University of Notre Dame and currently attends the New England Law Boston.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunches.

** There will be an evening panel discussion entitled The Invisible Athlete Forum @ 6pm in the SU Ballroom, featuring 3 LGBT athletes sharing experiences growing up gay in the sports world.
