UConn Reads 2017-2018: The Conundrum and Challenge of Immigration
Though widely recognized as a “nation of immigrants,” the migration of peoples to the United States has frequently been an unwelcome aspect of the American experience. From restrictions targeting Asian immigrants at the turn-of-the-twentieth century to contemporary deliberations involving refugees, from prohibitions involving the undocumented to travel bans against so-termed “terrorist” nations, immigration has consistently occupied a vexed place in U.S. politics. Aimed at considering both sides of the immigration debate, this year’s UConn Reads Selection Committee seeks by way of this evocative focus nominations that reflect the complexity of issue and topic. While remaining open to multiple types of nominations, the Committee is particularly interested in novels, non-fiction, poetry, short story collections, and graphic novels. This year’s nomination process will take place over April – May 2017; the announcement of the next UConn Reads book will occur in June 2017.
