    Keynote Speaker Dr. Julia Jordan-Zachery

Last November 2015 the Anna Julia Cooper Center at Wake Forest University and the White House Council on Women and Girls announced an initiative to promote scholarship and research on women and girls of color. By 2050, women of color will constitute more than half of all women in the United States. However, they (along with girls of color) are infrequently the central subjects of scholarly inquiry. This research deficit has meaningful consequences for the ways our institutions contribute to public discourse, policymaking, and knowledge about women and girls of color. (See https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/whitehouse.gov/files/documents/ADVANCING_EQUITY_FOR_WOMEN_AND_GIRLS_OF_COLOR_REPORT.pdf.)

To address this research deficit, the University of Connecticut has become a partner institution, along with over 35 other such universities and institutions, in the Collaborative to Advance Equity Through Research on Women and Girls of Color. It also has committed to efforts to broaden our knowledge in these areas through supporting research and programming on women and girls of color. (See http://africana.uconn.edu/collaborative-research/about/.)

We invite the University of Connecticut Community and others to join us in launching this year’s programming and events.  To initiate our focus, Dr. Julia Jordan-Zachery joins us as our keynote speaker, and we welcome you to join us in the opening of this important intellectual enterprise on our campus.

Dr. Julia S. Jordan-Zachery is Professor of Public and Community Service and Director of the Black Studies Program at Providence College (RI). Her interdisciplinary research focuses on African American women and public policy. She was recently awarded the Accinno Teaching Award, Providence College (2016-2017).

A reception will follow the lecture.
