Please join Native American Cultural Programs in celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a screening of "Off The Rez" from 6-8 PM in Laurel 101. This event is open to UConn students, staff, faculty, and the public. Shoni Schimmel will be visiting UConn on November 10th, and this documentary will provide some information about what Shoni's life was like prior to playing professional basketball.
About the film: Shoni Schimmel, 2014 WNBA All-Star MVP in her rookie season with the Atlanta Dream, left the reservation at age 16 to pursue her dream of playing professional basketball. An unforgettable story about a young Native American woman and her family and their determined pursuit of the American Dream, Off The Rez is an award-winning documentary that follows one of the country's top high school basketball prospects, 16 year old Shoni Schimmel, who must leave the reservation in order to play in a competitive, nationally-recognized basketball league.
