Special Events and Receptions

  • 3/5 Common Consciousness

This event is a one day student-led conference featuring lectures from social work students from Hochschule Merseburg,
Germany and UConn School of Social Work students who traveled to Germany, a keynote address, as well as an in-depth presentation on Systemic Social Work. This event will take place at the UConn School of Social Work, 8:30-4:45 pm, Zachs Community Room.

UConn students who participated in a 2015 travel study will present their research in collaboration with German
social work students. The UConn projects are the result of interviews conducted with Germans and focus on
topics such as the effects of the Holocaust on education, military and the role language plays in the perpetuation
of oppression. These presentations will occur over the lunch hour. Through their 12 day travel in Germany, discussions with German social work students and reflections and observations, UConn School of Social Work students integrate the oppressive events of the past with current day social problems to understand their implication for social work today.

German student presentation topics will consist of subjects such as systemic social work, racism, oppression and hip hop, and Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (PEGIDA), and the importance of comprehensive sex education. These presentations will occur after the keynote presentation in the morning. The presentation on Systemic Social Work
    will occur from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
