  • Space Heaters in the Workplace

With the start of the fall season and colder weather months arriving soon, now is a good time to remind UConn students, staff, and administration about the policy and safety tips for space heaters in our University Buildings.

All space heaters in university buildings require a permit for use.  Space heaters can be obtained at the Central Warehouse and then be inspected/permitted by the UConn Fire Marshal Unit.  Any space heaters not obtained from the Central Warehouse must be taken out of service and removed from the building.  The Central Warehouse has a supply of space heaters that have been reviewed and pre-approved by the UCon Fire Marshal Unit.

Just a reminder that if a space heater has been approved and tagged to follow these safety procedures:

    · Never leave a space heater unattended. Turn it off and unplug when you are leaving a room.

    · Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord, or any types of multiplex adapters or power strips.

    ·  Space heaters must have a 3-foot clearance from all combustible materials (paper, clothing, rugs) and placed on a solid, flat surface.

    ·  Keep space heaters out of the way of foot traffic and never near an exit or door.

Please see the attached link for the full policy and step by step process in obtaining an approved space heater.
