Joana Paulino, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biophysics at UConn Health. Her research focuses on membrane protein biophysics, structural biology, and virus-host interactions that contribute to severe viral disease outcomes. Using approaches including cryo-electron microscopy, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, protein biophysics, and cell-based studies, her laboratory investigates how flaviviruses such as Zika and Powassan viruses cross protective barriers like the blood-brain barrier and placenta. Dr. Paulino received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics from Florida State University and completed postdoctoral training at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the University of California, San Francisco before joining UConn Health.
